Girl Scouts to set up camp on West Side

Today's Girl Scouts have different tastes than their moms and grandmothers, says Susan Thompson, CEO of the Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council.

Rather than craving an outdoor adventure at, say, Camp Mamie Flynn or Camp Sandy Bend, they'd prefer a trip to the big city, where they can shop at the mall and shower at night.

To meet those needs, the Black Diamond Council plans to build what it calls a Girl Zone, a hotel-like facility with a dozen bunk beds, in a former auto parts store on Charleston's West Side.

The building is next door to the former Charleston Lincoln-Mercury dealership, which the council bought last year to replace its downtown home on Hale Street. Architects from ZMM have drawn up plans, and contractors will break ground as soon as the council can finish raising $6 million. 

..."We sold a couple of camps," Thompson said, "We didn't see the use. Kids said they want a more urban kind of situation, and we want to be part of the situation. We've taken the concept all over. They are just loving it. They want to be the first ones here."

Girl Scouts of the Black Diamond Council plans to sell two of its four West Virginia camps in 2011, focusing its efforts on Camp Rocky Ledges in Milton and Camp Giscowheco in Wheeling.

According to a release sent Thursday evening, Camp Sandy Bend in Elizabeth and Camp Mamie Flynn in Logan, will operate through Aug. 1, 2011, then close and go up for sale.

"The council will retain and devote appropriate resources to the maintenance and improvement of two other camps in its jurisdiction -- Camp Rocky Ledges in Milton and Camp Giscowheco in Wheeling," the release states. "Girl Scouting has a long tradition of outdoor program and Black Diamond will continue to offer girls outdoor experiences through use of our existing camps and by partnering with many other outdoor facilities."

A meeting was held in Logan County announcing that Camp Mamie Flynn in Logan County was going to be put up for sale on August 1, 2011. Black Diamond was going to take sealed bids at that time. Now that that date is drawing closer, new information has come to light. The camp has already been sold. Was before the meeting even took place. Bought by a local business man who has family members on the Black Diamond board.

There have been several rumors about what this man is going to do with the camp but after he and his insurance agent busted into our second day of Day Camp to take pictures, it looks like there is going to be a housing development built. First of all, he doesn't take ownership of the property until August 1. Secondly, there were close to 200 girls in camp today and he acted like we were an inconvenience to him.

There is a thin line between being a business man and being a greedy jerk. When you take one of the few positive things for kids in this area away to make a profit, you've crossed that line. And when you fly on a dirt road surrounded by children, when you have no business being there to start with, you're just an arrogant idiot.

And as for the Black Diamond Girl Scout Council, shame on you! Shame on you for going against everything we are supposed to teach these girls! All for profit, not for the girls. This whole incident makes me ashamed to be a volunteer with this organization.
