"There really isn't enough demand. We realized we have a broken business model. To maintain, we'd have to triple the prices or triple the attendance," Dalrymple said. "We believe Girl Scouts has a big role to play in getting girls outdoors, and we have to figure out how to. We're not going out of the outdoor education business, we're going out of the property-owning business. Eighty-five percent of our girls are not using our camps. It's costly for them, and it's costly for us."

The idea for building the lake stemmed from a Girl Scouts study.
"Our national organization did some research a number of years ago looking at the benefits of the outdoor experiences for girls. What they found is the girls who spend more time outdoors are better at meeting challenges head on," Schemenauer said.
...The lake, which is expected to provide a source for swimming to thousands of local girls, was made possible through donations from Manitowoc County businesses, foundations and residents, including the Ruth St. John and John Dunham West Foundation, Comcast, Miller Engineer Scientists and Doug's Dragline and Grading.
"The customers who buy Girl Scout Cookies helped make this lake a reality," Schemenauer said.

HINGHAM – Construction of the Girl Scout House was a community effort back in 1929. So is the restoration effort now underway.
Businesses have donated materials and labor, Eagle Scout candidates have made building improvements their projects, and town has approved $98,049 in Community Preservation Act money for the effort.
“I think it’s a perfect example of preserving community values,” said Peg Doyle, president of the Hingham Girl Scout House Inc. “The support has been just great.”
She said the effort has involved hundreds of volunteers and donations.
When the group took over ownership of the house last year from the regional Girl Scout council, the Burr Road building was in tough shape.
“The furnace broke, the roof leaked and there was water leaking in around the foundation, Doyle said. “In six months, we’ve made huge progress.”

Hunter was inspired to write the story after learning Camp Latonka, a Girl Scout facility along Lake Wappapello in Missouri, was earmarked to be shut down along with many other Girl Scout camps across the country. His wife Emily was a Girl Scout who had attended the camp and worked there as a counselor.
After a great deal of hard work, a grassroots group presented a proposal to save the camp. As part of that deal, the Friends of Camp Latonka agreed to fund part of the annual operating costs, as well as deferred maintenance costs.
Thirty percent of the sales from "The No-Campfire Girls" will go toward a fund to assist in the maintenance and operating costs for Camp Latonka.

"The council property committee is committed to providing program properties that are relevant to the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, support quality outdoor experiences for girls, and are fiscally sustainable through the best use of council resources to provide value for our girls." Soots continued, "The committee understands that the matter of property in a Girl Scout council is very complex and stirs many emotions, but also realizes that the only reason a council should have property is to support the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. The committee has worked to provide a recommendation that aligns the needs of current and future girls with the leadership development mission of Girl Scouting.
