The lawsuit also purports the sale is “unjust enrichment” and that Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey, a non-profit group, intends “to utilize the proceeds” in order “to satisfy various pension obligations to employees and former employees” of three councils realigned in 2008.

It also claims money raised by Friends of Eagle Island specifically to restore the property was spent on other projects, and it seeks legal injunction against any sale.

Mary Connell, Chief Executive Officer of the Girl Scouts of Central and Southern New Jersey, explained the Girl Scouts organization had underutilized the Sheppard’s Mill Camp property in recent years, so the board decided to sell it.

“When we were approached by a consortium of partners, we were interested because we like open space,” Connell said, clarifying that the organization’s board of directors, who will make the final decision on the potential transaction, is awaiting a firm offer from the combination of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) Green Acres Program and Natural Lands Trust (NLT) in conjunction with Greenwich and Hopewell townships.

“In Girl Scouting, we care very much about the environment. ...It’s a beautiful piece of land, just a gorgeous piece of property that’s really pristine,” said Connell.

As the proposal for preservation of Sheppard’s Mill Camp currently stands, the 405-acre property, including its 52-acre lake, will become an NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife site added to the 819-acre Cohansey River Wildlife Management Area. The Sheppard’s Mill Camp property will be open to the public for recreational uses including hunting, fishing, boating, hiking and bird-watching.
