Girl Scouts split over camp sale
http://www.friendsofcln.org/storage/docs/timesunion_nov22-09.pdf Camp Little Notch – The History http://www.camplittlenotch.org/history/ In 2008, the Girl Scout Council decided to close CLN and sell the property. Upon learning of the impending sale, an energetic group of former campers and staff—who believed CLN could and should reopen—formed Friends of Camp Little Notch (Friends of CLN), the non-profit organization that now operates CLN. Friends of CLN has successfully conserved the property through a relationship with the Open Space Institute (OSI) and are in the process of purchasing a portion of this extraordinary land from OSI. http://itsmandible.blogspot.com/2013/09/goodnight-not-goodbye.html In the world of Girl Scout camp, no one cares what clothes you wear. Heck, no one cares if your clothes even match. No one laughs at you when you fall down and scrape your knee. There is no embarrassment, there is no harassment, there are no mean girls. In the world of Girl Scout camp, there are meals called "shipwreck dinners" where you might have to eat dinner with tongs, or "raccoon dinners" where you eat dinner with your fingers taped together - and everyone does, and no one cares, and being messy is all part of the game. Fun is the number one priority at Girl Scout camp, and if that means you've never sailed before and you sail into the swim area, that doesn't matter! You've had fun, you've learned, you've grown, you've embraced such a different, amazing and new experience in a nurturing, compassionate environment where everyone understands. In the world of Girl Scout camp, we are all together. |

Southampton Buys A Girl Scout Camp
http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9A07E4DD103EF935A15752C1A9609C8B63 The Girl Scouts decided to sell the campgrounds last year because the land was rarely used by the 22,000 Girl Scouts in Nassau. Deborah Goldsmith, the organization's chief operating officer, said, ''Despite our efforts to increase its usage, we realized that camping just doesn't seem to be one of the things that the girls like to do.'' 1. Why is Girl Scouts of Nassau County selling Camp Tekakwitha? It is a matter of stewardship. The vast majority of GSNC’s financial assets are in the properties that are held at Camp Blue Bay and Camp Tekakwitha. However, these valuable assets are utilized by less than 10% of our membership, and neither property brings in enough revenue to cover the direct expenses that the Council incurs each year to maintain, insure and run programs at these sites; hence, both of these valuable properties represent a drain on our liquid assets and annual revenue. By selling the property at Camp Tek, the Council will earn interest on the investment of the proceeds of the sale. This interest income will allow the Council to significantly expand its services to girls and adult volunteers in Nassau County, and will also allow for resources to be directed to much needed capital improvements and program expansion at Camp Blue Bay. |
