Property plan approved following board recommendation and membership vote at the GSGLA Annual Meeting on April 18, 2015
http://www.girlscoutsla.org/pages/camp/PropertyPlan.html We recommend reviewing the following program centers, which are leased by GSGLA from governmental entities for minimal rental. The review will be for the purpose of determining the feasibility and interest in transferring the leases to a foundation or other nonprofit. This could emulate the Hill-Harbison House model, which is now operated by a local foundation and used by Girl Scouts. Although the lease payments for these properties are minimal, the properties still require considerable capital improvements and continued maintenance and have safety and liability concerns. These properties are located in public parks, have few amenities, limited use and low user satisfaction. If a transfer is not feasible, we recommend terminating the leases and retiring these properties. |

Success in GSNorCal Council (property plan and updates)
http://www.girlscoutsnorcal.org/pages/about/property_assessment.html Last fall the Board Property Task Group developed, with your input at town hall meetings and via email and letters, a draft plan to help us save our camp properties. The Board adopted the plan at its November 2011 meeting. This one year update reports on our progress and the work ahead. In summary, we are making progress. Summer 2012 was a record year for attendance at both council-run and volunteer-run camps, and we were able to reduce annual losses on camp property operations by about $280,000. During 2013 and beyond, we are taking action to achieve a further $220,000 in annual savings. We also took action on Member recommendations, including hiring a Director of Property Development during 2011, to improve marketing and information about our sites, and increase use and rentals of Girl Scout camp properties by Girl Scout members and other non-profits. This gave us an opportunity to “test the market” to see what opportunities there are to increase use and rentals of our properties and to better understand what improvements might be needed to help us increase rentals. Based on this work, the Task Group recommended that GSNorCal use a phased approach to improve the economics of our camps and outdoor program centers, with no planned property sales. Our focus is on saving -- not selling. Twin Canyon Work Group was formed in March 2012 and continue to work to keep it open. See their FB page

Several volunteers believe Twin Canyon's potentially lucrative Lafayette location is the only reason Girl Scouts is considering it for closure. |

In 2008, the board began a systematic study of our council's seven properties. A committee of board members, volunteers, staff and outside experts (engineers, attorneys, contractors, real estate agents) thoroughly examined each property to determine its safety, condition, annual usage, past and future maintenance expenses, and other considerations. This comprehensive process included property tours; consultations with a GSUSA representative, financial experts, and other Girl Scouts councils; and many conversations with our volunteers and girls. |
