Virginia

Girl Scout Commonwealth Council, GSCV

  • Camp Kittamaqund, Northumberland County
Sale announced January 2007

Sale postponed for further options studies May 2007

A change in county zoning restrictions in February (2007) put the sale in doubt and a council election in April (2007) installed a slate of directors opposed to the sale who called themselves the Evergreens.

2014 Camp is still listed on council website.
For the moment, sale of Camp Kitty canceled:

The Camp Kitty controversy sparked a candlelight vigil outside the council's Mechanicsville headquarters in January and paved the way for the Evergreen ticket to win 17 of 18 seats in a council board election in late April. The new members outnumber the 14 board members with unexpired terms who had been on the board that approved the camp sale in November.

The abrupt closure of residential camping last summer resulted in a flood of offers from real-estate developers seeking to profit from one of the few remaining large waterfront tracts in Northumberland County. One offer under consideration by the council is rumored to be $10 million.
