From plan:
A change in strategic direction for outdoor properties. Resources should be focused to develop two premier properties: Stevens Ranch and Camp Rio Blanco creating “high quality outdoor programs and facilities for girls”.
  1. Though specific program plans are still in development, Camp Rio Blanco will have a STEM focus to maximize the capital investment already in place from the building of Lorax Lodge.
  2. Increase capacity for Stevens Ranch with modern facilities and to modernize current facilities and using green building alternatives as much as possible and economically reasonable.
  3. Gain insights and input for site, program and fund planning from members along the way.

Camp Whispering Oaks has been a treasured site for girls and volunteers in the Denton area for half a century, providing them with fun memories and increased knowledge of the wonderful world of nature and outdoor leadership skills. Although Camp Whispering Oaks will always hold a cherished place in the hearts of many, we look forward to enhancing these opportunities as we develop an outdoor leadership center of excellence at nearby Camp K on Lake Texoma," said Colleen Walker, CEO of Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas.

A complete property master plan was conducted in 2011 which included surveys, town hall meetings, focus groups and feedback from the membership of Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas. After reviewing thorough evaluations of each camp property and recommendations from experts in property utilization, the council is moving forward with a plan to develop four Centers of Excellence that will enable us to provide girls with a 21st century Outdoor Leadership Experience.

GSA to cut support for scout house

Recently the council unveiled its long-range property plan, which included closing three scout houses — Seguin, New Braunfels and Del Rio.

But because the Seguin house is not owned by the council, they could only cut the financial resources.

“The recommendation out of that plan was to relinquish the responsibility for that house in Seguin,” said Stephanie A. Finleon, Girls Scouts of Southwest Texas chief development and communications officer. “We don’t own it, so we can’t close it or sell it, but we will no longer be supporting it as of Dec. 31.”

The house was entrusted to the local Girl Scout troops and currently, three trustees are named on the deed to the property and the house, including Tina Real.

“That was put into place back in 1946 to keep council from ever taking away the house from Seguin girls,” she said.
